University Recreation offers students an opportunity to get involved with University life by becoming a part of the University Recreation staff. We hire students to fill several positions, ranging from facility staff to sports officials.
Jobs at University Recreation
Climbing Wall Staff
Student employees help mediate participant safety and risk management, teach climbing movement and belay instruction, and foster a fun and encouraging environment. Staff are trained in bouldering, top rope, and lead-climbing skillsets and also lead the Intro to Climbing non-credit classes. Monthly special events held at the climbing wall are also developed and led by wall staff.
Activity Center Staff and Rec Center West/SPN Staff
Student employees are trained to work in specific areas, including control desk, building attendant, gym attendant and fitness attendant. All employees are expected to be positive representatives of University Recreation and to uphold the department’s policies and procedures at all times. Employees must exhibit outstanding customer service skills as they are the primary contact with patrons to the Activity Center, Rec Center West and SPN Wellness Center.
Group Fitness Instructors
Group Fitness Instructors are responsible for developing fun, enthusiastic classes that are fitness-oriented. Instructors should be certified in Group Exercise instruction and have knowledge in Cardio-Kickboxing, Yoga, Body-Pump, Jazzercise, or other types of aerobic training. Instructors will be required to perform various portions of their routines at the time of the interview.
Intramural Officials
Student officials enforce the rules and regulations for sports offered by the Intramural Program. It is the responsibility of the official to keep the games running and to maintain a safe atmosphere. Sport-specific training is provided for all major sports (flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and softball). No experience is necessary, but employees must be proficient at conflict resolution, time management and critical thinking.
Lifeguards
Student lifeguards are responsible for the daily operation of the Natatorium. All lifeguards must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
Personal Trainers
Personal Trainers are responsible for working one-on-one with clients to achieve fitness goals. Trainers must be a certified personal trainer with knowledge to address nutrition, create workouts, assess results and educate on proper techniques. Personal Trainers must be able to commit to their clients and the overall Fitness program.
Water Safety Instructors
Water Safety Instructors must hold a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification and be at least 16 years old. All instructors teach adult and children swim classes, private lessons, and give water safety presentations to children and their parents.
